On 30/01/2019, Prof. Andrey L. Rogach from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, City University of Hong Kong gave an invited talk on “Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Applications of Carbon Dots” at IAPME. More than 30 faculty members and Ph.D. students from IAPME, FHS and ICMS attended this seminar. Firstly, Prof. Rogach gave an overview of light-emitting colloidal quantum dots, and pointed out that the main problem of inorganic colloidal quantum dots in biological applications was the contained hazard metal elements. Then, Prof. Rogach introduced carbon dots (CDs) as promising fluorescent materials for a wide range of applications, both in the biomedical and in optoelectronics fields. Prof. Rogach reviewed the synthetic procedures towards CDs with an emission color spanning the whole visible spectral range from the blue to the near-infrared, and introduced some approaches on how to keep the emission strong even in solid state, thus overcoming the issues of aggregation-induced quenching. Finally, Prof. Rogach concluded with the prospects for the burgeoning field of CDs as promising light-emitting materials.
Prof. Andrey L. Rogach is a Chair Professor of Photonics Materials at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Founding Director of the Centre for Functional Photonics (CFP) at City University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on synthesis, assembly and optical spectroscopy of colloidal semiconductor and metal nanocrystals and their hybrid structures, and their use for energy-related and optoelectronic applications. He authored over 350 scientific publications with an h-index of 89 recorded in Web of Science and 106 in Google Scholar with citation over 39,000, which ranked him as Highly Cited Researcher (Clarivate Analytics, 2018), and 51st worldwide among “100 TOP MATERIALS SCIENTISTS OF THE PAST DECADE” by Thomson Reuters (2011). His distinctions include the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Research Award of the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation (Germany, 2019), the Croucher Senior Research Fellowship (Hong Kong, 2018), the CityU President’s Award (2017). Andrey Rogach is a Fellow of the Electromagnetic Academy (USA) and serves as an Associate Editor of ACS Nano since 2011.
