Prof. Bing Chen (陳兵) is the Tenured Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, visited IAPME on December 3, 2025, as part of the IAPME Seminar Series. During his visit, he delivered an insightful presentation titled “Research on the Mechanism of Mineral Additives in Magnesium Phosphate Cement System.” The seminar was hosted by Prof. Guoxing Sun, who extended the invitation to Prof. Chen.

Prof. Chen is an esteemed researcher in materials engineering, with a focused research interest in cement and concrete. He has published over 250 academic papers, including more than 200 indexed by SCI, which have garnered over 17,000 non-self citations. To date, he has led more than 30 scientific research projects in this field, securing a total of RMB 9 million in funding.

During his talk, Prof. Chen highlighted magnesium phosphate cement’s (MPC) rapid setting, high early strength, and strong adhesion—along with its potential in rapid repair and grouting. He also addressed MPC’s challenges, including poor water resistance, high cost, and difficult setting-time control, and proposed solutions using mineral admixtures like fly ash, GGBS, and nano-silica. His research reveals how these additives improve MPC’s workability, strength, and durability through combined physical and chemical effects.

The seminar provided attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the latest advancements in developing thermal insulation and humidity-regulating wall materials based on the micro–nano pore structures of natural materials. Prof. Chen has been granted 27 authorized invention patents—both domestic and international—and has received eight prestigious awards, including the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award and the Huaxia Construction Science and Technology Award.
