The Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) at the University of Macau recently hosted an academic seminar delivered by Prof. Zhiyuan Zeng (曾志遠), Associate Professor from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at City University of Hong Kong. The lecture, titled “Intercalation in 2D Materials and In-Situ Studies,” took place on the afternoon of December 4, 2025, the seminar was hosted by Prof. Guichuan. Xing. The event attracted faculty members, researchers, and students interested in advanced materials and nanotechnology.

In his presentation, Prof. Zeng introduced his group’s innovative lithium-ion intercalation and exfoliation method for mass-producing high-quality two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). He explained how precise control over electrochemical parameters enables the selective synthesis of specific phases, such as 2H bilayer or 1T′ monolayer WS₂, with yields exceeding 90%. Prof. Zeng also shared insights into the use of in-situ liquid-phase transmission electron microscopy to visualize intercalation dynamics, as well as the promising environmental applications of metallic-phase TMDs in heavy metal removal and water desalination.

With over 176 SCI publications, including papers in Nature Reviews Chemistry and Nature Protocols, and recognition as a Highly Cited Researcher, Prof. Zeng is a leading figure in the field. His visit provided valuable inspiration for UM researchers and fostered potential collaborations in materials science and environmental technology.
