On 29 November, Prof. Tze-Chien Sum from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore gave an invited talk on “Halide Perovskites: The New Wonder Photovoltaic Materials”. Firstly, Prof. Sum summarized the photophysical mechanisms of these emerging solar cell metal-halide perovskite materials. He especially emphasized the properties which are revealed by his research group. Now, these proposed mechanisms are widely accepted by the research community. Secondly, Prof. Sum presented his group’s latest research breakthroughs on hot charge carrier extraction and multiexciton generation in perovskite nanocrystals. His researches will advance the knowledge on how to overcome the solar cell traditional efficiency limitation.

Prof. Tze-Chien Sum is a full professor of Physics at the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS), NTU where he leads the Femtosecond Dynamics Laboratory. His present research focuses on investigating light matter interactions in a broad range of emergent nanoscale and light harvesting systems. According to SCI database, he published over 200 papers and his publications have been cited over 14000 times with an H-Index of 54. Professor Sum has received numerous recognition for his research work, recent ones being the 2018 National Research Foundation Investigatorship Award, 2015 Chemical Society of Japan Asian International Symposium Distinguished Lectureship Award, 2014 Nanyang Award for Research Excellence (Team), and 2014 Institute of Physics Singapore World Scientific Medal and Prize for Outstanding Physics Research. Professor Sum is a dedicated and an excellent teacher. He teaches a broad spectrum of Physics core modules and has so far gathered 11 teaching awards, including the 2010 SPMS Teaching Excellence Award (Honour Roll) and 2006 Nanyang Award for Excellence in Teaching. He has served in various academic capacities, including Associate Chair (Research), Assistant Dean (Research), Associate Dean (Research).
