The International Workshop on Functional Materials 2015, which was co-organised by the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME)/Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) of University of Macau (UM) and the Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, was held at UM recently. The event attracted more than 40 experts, scholars, and students from Russia, Australia, the United States, mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
‘Functional materials are found in all classes of materials: ceramics, metals, polymers, and composites,’ said UM Vice Rector (Rector) Prof Rui Martins in his opening speech at the workshop. ‘The event brings together leading experts in the field of functional materials to our new campus, enabling them to see the exciting new developments that are currently taking place here. This workshop will also enable students and members of our society to see that UM has the potential to become a flourishing center of learning in the fields of applied physics and materials science.’
This year’s workshop is the fourth and the largest edition since its founding in 2012. It provides a platform for experts, scholars, and students to discuss their latest research findings in the field of functional materials. UM Vice Rector (Student Affairs) Prof Haydn Chen was the principal organiser of the event. Participants in the event included Prof Sammy Chan from the School of Materials Science and Engineering, University of New South Wales, Australia; Prof Cao Wenwu from the Department of Mathematics and Materials Research Institute, Pennsylvania State University, United States; Prof Tang Zikang, director of the Nano Science and Technology Program, Department of Physics, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong; Prof Tseng Tseng-Yuen, Prof Edward Chang Yi, and Prof Lin Hong-Cheu from the Department of Materials Science & Engineering, Chiao Tung University, Taiwan; and Prof Chen Xiangming from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Zhejing University, mainland China.
The two-day workshop included six keynote speeches, 21 presentations and a poster session that cover various topics, including materials characterisation and testing, anti-corrosion materials, and ceramics materials.
