On February 21st, IAPME invited Prof. Xiaodong CHEN from School of Materials Science & Engineering at Nangyang Technological University (Singapore) to give a wonderful talk on “Mechano-adaptable Materials for Conformal Sensors”, chaired by Prof. Yuxin Tang. After the talk, Prof. Chen visited the laboratories of IAPME and had a collaboration discussion with faculty members in IAPME.
Firstly, the application of wearable sensors with enhanced smart functions was introduced. The health information for human body can be real-time monitored by wearable sensors. Secondly, the breakthrough in smart wearable sensors from his group was presented, including the latest progress fabricating conformal sensors based on the rational design of structural materials, individual devices development, and integration. In order to better interface with human skin, the development of novel mechanically durable material for conformal sensors are built based on flexible and stretchable substrates, deformable electrodes and circuits, bio-stable and bio-compatible, and so on. Finally, the future trends and his personal perspectives on the development of flexible and stretchable were discussed.
Dr. Xiaodong CHEN is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, Professor of Physics and Applied Physics (by courtesy) at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). In addition, he is the Director of Innovative Centre for Flexible Devices (iFLEX) at NTU and the Director of Max Planck – NTU Joint Lab for Artificial Senses. He received his B.S. degree (Honors) in chemistry from Fuzhou University (China) in 1999, M.S. degree (Honors) in physical chemistry from the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2002, and Ph.D. degree (Summa Cum Laude) in biochemistry from University of Muenster (Germany) in 2006. After his postdoctoral fellow working at Northwestern University (USA), he started his independent research career as Nanyang Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University since 2009. He was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in Sept 2013, then Full Professor in Sept 2016. His research interests include interactive materials and devices, integrated nano-bio interface, and cyber-human interfaces. He is the Associate Editor of Nanoscale and Nanoscale Advances and Scientific Editor of Nanoscale Horizons. He also is the member of editorial advisory board of Advanced Materials, Small Methods, Advanced Materials Technology, Advanced Intelligent Systems, Materials Today Energy, and ACS Applied Bio Materials. He was conferred as the Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry in 2016. He was recognized by more than ten prestigious awards and honors including the precious Singapore NRF Investigatorship, Small Young Innovator Award, Singapore NRF Fellowship, Nanyang Research Award, Advanced Materials Hall of Fame, Lubrizol Young Materials Science Investigator Award and Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics.
