Prof. Yonghua Song, the Rector of the University of Macau (UM), visited the Institute of Applied Physics and Materials Engineering (IAPME) on his first day as UM’s Rector on 9 January 2018.

Prof. Zikang Tang, the Director of IAPME, warmly welcomed the Rector and delivered a presentation introducing the establishment of IAPME and its 5-year development plan in the aspects of academic affairs, research focuses, international collaboration and community service.  A few key research projects were also outlined for a better understanding of the research work being undertaken.  In addition, Prof. Tang also reported the progress and results IAPME achieved in the past two years.  After the presentation, there was an interactive discussion in a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere on the opportunities and challenges for IAPME, which is conducive to the future development of IAPME.

The meeting session was followed by a laboratory tour to Materials Characterization Centre which is made up of a few open laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.  Along the tour, principal investigators showcased the distinct features of the equipment and demonstrated some of their latest research results to Prof. Song as well.  Highlights of demonstrations include design and fabrication of super-efficient catalysts for water splitting, foamed cement-based composites, cement-based piezoelectric transducers, flexible cement-based materials, super elastic hydrogel, magnetic field based digital microfluidics device and quantum dot LED.

At the end of the visit, Prof. Song has expressed his recognition towards the efforts and research performance of IAPME and would look forward to a better development of IAPME.
