On 4th January, Prof. Yiyang SUN from the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Science, gave a talk titled “Chalcogenide Perovskites for Photovoltaics” at IAMPE. At the seminar, Prof. Sun introduced the calculation based exploration of chalcogenide-based perovskite materials for photovoltaics applications. The S or Se based perovskite materials show much better stability than their organic counterparts. He found several compounds, namely, CaTiS3, BaZrS3, CaZrSe3 and CaHfSe3, which could process suitable electronic properties for solar cell applications. One of these materials predicted, BaZrS3 was successfully synthesized with properties match calculation prediction. He concluded that Chalcogenide perovskites may have great potential in photovoltaics.

Prof. Yiyang SUN received his BEng, MSc, and PhD from Jilin University, Xiamen University, and National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1996, 1999, 2004, respectively. He was a postdoctoral fellow at NUS, National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) from 2004 to 2010. From 2010 to 2017, he was a Research Assistant Professor and then Research Scientist at RPI. Since 2017, Dr. Sun assumed a Professor position at Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He has published 90 peer-reviewed articles in the fields of defects in semiconductors, energy materials, and surface science, etc., with over 2500 citations and an H-index of 28.
