On 25/01/2019, Prof. Guosheng SHAO from the State Centre for International Cooperation on Designer Energy and Environmental Materials, Zhengzhou University gave an invited talk on “A Designer Materials Approach for Development of Energy/environmental Materials” at IAPME. More than 30 faculty members and Ph.D. students from IAPME attended this seminar. Firstly, Prof. Shao presented how to modify the electronic properties of TiOwith ion-doping. With these optimized TiO2 as the electron extractors, high performance metal-halide perovskite solar cells were demonstrated. Secondly, Prof. Shao introduced how to design the solid state lithium ion battery with first principle calculations. Based on these theoretical predictions, they also realized high performance solid state lithium battery. Therefore, Prof. Shao’s group demonstrated a designer approach, via theoretical modelling to guide practical delivery of novel energy materials. The presented researches attracted a lot attention from the IAPME audiences.

Prof Guosheng SHAO is the Director of the State Centre for International Cooperation on Designer Low-carbon & Environmental Materials (CDLCEM) at the Zhengzhou University, China. He is also the Founding Director of the Zhengzhou Materials Genome Institute (ZMGI, 2016), and Visiting Professor to the University of Surrey, UK (2018-present). He earned his PhD in materials science at the University of Surrey in 1995 and thereupon worked as a research fellow and senior research fellow, until transferring to the Brunel University as Reader in Materials in 2005. He joined the University of Bolton as Professor of Materials Modelling & Simulation in 2007, and then established the Institute for Renewable Energy and Environmental Technologies (IREET, 2011) as its founding Director, together with the responsibility as Head of Engineering and then appointed to be the Head for Engineering, Sports and Sciences etc. His academic interest is “designer” materials and application devices, which is characterized by multi-functional modelling, advanced characterization techniques esp. TEM, EELS and XPS, and advanced thin film coating technologies. His current focus on sustainable (renewable) energy systems and environmental technologies. He is also proactive in bridging academic knowledge with manufacturing, resulting in commercialization of inventions covering mass production of extremely low-defect graphene and processing facilities.
