On 15 October, Prof. Xiaozhang ZHANG  from Tsinghua University, was invited to give a talk entitled ” Advanced flywheels for energy storage “. At the seminar, Prof. Zhang introduced Flywheel energy storage system (FESS). Energy storage is a challenge field in sustainable development. Flywheel energy storage system (FESS) is a promising technology compared to other energy storage technologies. This talk presented the concepts, principles and development of FESS in China. One under-going project was also introduced.

Prof. Xiaozhang Zhang is a professor at Department of Engineering Physics, Tsinghua University, Beijing. He obtained BSc at Tsinghua University in 1983, MSc at Southeast University in 1986 and PhD at Hohai University in 1988. He has visiting research experiences in Cranfield Institute of Technology supported by the Royal Society, MIT by Chinese Scholarship and Cambridge University. His research interests are on high speed rotating machines and mechanical measurement. He published a book (Theory and method for flow measurement by electromagnetic induction), a list of technical papers in journals and conference proceedings. He obtained 1 second Award of Chinese Science and Technology Progress, 2 first prize of ministry grade awards.
